Miso Onion Steaks
These thick onion steaks are coated in a honey miso glaze that turns wonderfully sticky and sweet when grilled. These would make a great veggie BBQ option for summer or just great with slaw and potato salad, or serve up alongside veggie burgers.
Substitutes:
- No rice vinegar? Use white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar instead.
- No ginger paste? Try with garlic paste instead.
- No honey? Use maple syrup or any sugar instead.

Ingredients:
3 Onions
2 tbsp Miso paste
2 tbsp Honey
2 tbsp Soy sauce
2 tbsp Sesame oil
2 tbsp Ginger paste
1 tbsp Rice vinegar
For serving:
2 Spring onions (sliced)
Lime wedges
Recipe:
- Preheat the oven to 200C/180c fan/6 gas mark. In a mixing bowl, combine the miso paste, honey, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger paste and vinegar.
- Top and tail the onions, then peel them, but keep them whole. Cut each onion into 1.5 cm thick slices. Arrange the onion slices on a lined baking tray and pour over all the marinade.
- Transfer to the oven and roast for 35-40 minutes, until tender.
- Arrange onion steaks on a serving plate, and sprinkle with spring onions before serving. Squeeze a little lime juice and place a couple of lime wedges on the plate. Enjoy!
How to store
Store in an airtight container, in the fridge, for up to 3 days.
