Miso Onion Steaks

These thick onion steaks are coated in a honey miso glaze that turns wonderfully sticky and sweet when grilled. These would make a great veggie BBQ option for summer or just great with slaw and potato salad, or serve up alongside veggie burgers.

Substitutes:

  • No rice vinegar? Use white wine vinegar or apple cider vinegar instead. 
  • No ginger paste? Try with garlic paste instead. 
  • No honey? Use maple syrup or any sugar instead.

Ingredients:

3 Onions

2 tbsp Miso paste

2 tbsp Honey

2 tbsp Soy sauce

2 tbsp Sesame oil

2 tbsp Ginger paste

1 tbsp Rice vinegar

For serving:

2 Spring onions (sliced)

Lime wedges

Recipe:

  1. Preheat the oven to 200C/180c fan/6 gas mark. In a mixing bowl, combine the miso paste, honey, soy sauce, sesame oil, ginger paste and vinegar. 
  2. Top and tail the onions, then peel them, but keep them whole. Cut each onion into 1.5 cm thick slices. Arrange the onion slices on a lined baking tray and pour over all the marinade. 
  3. Transfer to the oven and roast for 35-40 minutes, until tender. 
  4. Arrange onion steaks on a serving plate, and sprinkle with spring onions before serving. Squeeze a little lime juice and place a couple of lime wedges on the plate. Enjoy!
